Copenhagen changed alliance in 2024 and the fare landscape changed with it. SAS left Star Alliance on the first of September that year, after decades as a founding member, and joined SkyTeam instead. The move was a condition of the Air France KLM investment that had taken a stake of nineteen point nine percent in the airline the year before. For a US traveler the effect is concrete: SAS and Delta now sit on the same side of the table into their shared hub, and the sharpest pricing pressure into Copenhagen arrives from outside that alliance rather than within it.
SAS holds the nonstops from Newark and from Washington Dulles into its own Copenhagen base. Delta flies from New York JFK and added Minneapolis in May 2025, three times weekly on an Airbus A330 carrying the full Delta One cabin. Between them the two carriers cover the East Coast and the upper Midwest, and the European hubs cover everything else through one stop.

Their flexibility and customer first approach truly stand out. Highly recommend for both value and quality.

Winghoppers is extremely helpful! They always find the best flights at the best prices. Too bad I hadn't found you earlier, it would have saved me a lot of money. I can recommend it to everyone, even just to quickly check a price.

The Metro leaves from the terminal itself and reaches Kongens Nytorv in about thirteen minutes, running around the clock. There is no need to arrange a transfer in advance, and on a morning arrival you will be in the city long before any hotel will release a room. Plan the late checkout on the return instead.
SAS from Newark and Washington Dulles, and Delta from New York JFK and Minneapolis. One stop routings over Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam and Paris widen the field and often price below the nonstops.
No. SAS left Star Alliance on the first of September 2024 and joined SkyTeam, alongside Delta, Air France and KLM. The move followed the Air France KLM investment that took a stake of nineteen point nine percent in the airline.
Around seven and a half hours eastbound, arriving in the morning. The westbound leg runs closer to nine hours against the prevailing winds.
November through February carries the lowest fares of the year. For a better balance of price and weather, look at late April into May or the whole of September.
The Metro runs from the terminal to Kongens Nytorv in about thirteen minutes and operates through the night. It is one of the fastest airport transfers in Europe and needs no advance booking.

The rest of the Copenhagen brief: what the SAS alliance move did to fares, why Kastrup is worth routing through, and the two windows that beat the summer peak.
Read moreShow lessKastrup is the real argument for routing through Copenhagen rather than around it. It is the strongest connecting hub in the Nordics, compact enough to cross on foot in minutes, with onward service running all day to Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki and the smaller Scandinavian cities. If your destination sits anywhere in the region, ticketing the onward leg together with the transatlantic crossing protects the connection, costs remarkably little extra and is almost always cheaper than assembling the journey from separate tickets.
The crossing runs around seven and a half hours eastbound from New York and lands in the morning. Six hours of time difference is enough that the flat bed stops being a comfort question and becomes a scheduling one. Denmark is also an expensive country once you are on the ground, which quietly changes the arithmetic: the gap between economy and business is a smaller share of the total trip cost here than it is on most European routes.
Getting in is among the fastest in Europe. Kastrup sits eight kilometres from the centre and the Metro reaches Kongens Nytorv in about thirteen minutes, running through the night. A morning arrival puts you at breakfast in Indre By long before any hotel will hand over a room, so it is worth negotiating the late checkout on the way out rather than the early check in on the way there.
The seasonal curve is steep and daylight drives it. June and July bring close to eighteen hours of it, and the published fares follow the sun. Late April into May, and the whole of September, are the professional windows: the weather still holds, the crowds have thinned and the premium cabins soften considerably. November through February is the cheapest stretch of the year and also the darkest, which is a trade rather than a bargain.
One quirk is worth knowing before you compare fares. Kastrup doubles as the effective airport for southern Sweden: the Oresund train leaves from beneath the terminal and reaches Malmo in around twenty minutes. Travelers heading for Lund, Helsingborg or that whole corner of the country routinely fly into Copenhagen rather than routing through Stockholm, and on a business class ticket the difference between the two approaches can be several hundred dollars.
