Why New Zealand

Flying business class to New Zealand

New Zealand punches absurdly above its weight in premium aviation. Air New Zealand connects Auckland nonstop with New York, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu, United and Delta fly their own aircraft, American joins seasonally, and Qantas routes the rest of the map over Sydney. For five million people at the bottom of the Pacific that is a remarkable amount of flat bed capacity, and it is the reason negotiated fares into Auckland surprise people. The New York nonstop in particular rewired the market, putting the East Coast one flight from the South Pacific.

Auckland is the gateway, but the country is the point. The domestic network reaches Queenstown, Christchurch and Wellington in under ninety minutes, the legs ticket through with the international fare, and the classic structure, into Auckland and home from Christchurch after a South Island run, prices nearly as well as a simple return. Campervan travelers should still land in Auckland; the one way drop fees heading south beat backtracking.

New Zealand business class FAQs

  • Air New Zealand nonstop from six US gateways, United from San Francisco, Delta from Los Angeles, American seasonally and Qantas over Sydney.

  • The austral winter from June through September, unless Queenstown skiing is the goal. Summer from December through February is the peak.

  • Over Auckland or Christchurch on domestic legs that ticket through with the international fare. An open jaw home from Christchurch saves backtracking.

  • Around thirteen hours from the West Coast and over sixteen from New York, overnight in both directions across the date line.

The seasons are inverted: December through February is the summer and cruise peak, compounded by local school holidays, while the austral winter is the fare floor everywhere except Queenstown, where the ski season runs the best lift lines in the southern hemisphere. October, November and March through May are the shoulders, with good weather, open roads and soft fares.

The date line does its trick on every routing: leave Tuesday evening, land Thursday morning, get the day back on the way home. The flights are overnight in both directions, which makes the route one of the easiest long crossings to sleep through in a seat that flattens.

Tell our travel experts your dates, your islands and your gateway, and we will quote Air New Zealand against the American carriers and the Sydney routings, with a personal quote typically within the hour. If Australia or Fiji is part of the plan, one ticket usually beats two.
