Auckland has quietly become one of the best served long haul destinations from the United States. Air New Zealand flies nonstop from New York, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu, United and Delta add their own aircraft on the West Coast routes, American joins seasonally, and Qantas covers the one stop over Sydney. For a country of five million people that is an extraordinary amount of premium capacity, and capacity is what negotiated fares feed on. The New York service in particular changed the market, putting the East Coast a single flight from the South Pacific for the first time.
Business Premier on Air New Zealand is a herringbone flat bed with a genuinely warm service culture, and the airline is rolling refreshed cabins through the fleet, including the more private Business Premier Luxe suites arriving on retrofitted aircraft. The honest note is that the current seat is an older design than the newest American and Asian products; the bedding, the food and the crews carry it, and the negotiated pricing usually settles the argument. Premium economy on this airline is among the best anywhere, but over thirteen hours the flat bed still wins.

Winghoppers is extremely helpful! They always find the best flights at the best prices. Too bad I hadn't found you earlier, it would have saved me a lot of money. I can recommend it to everyone, even just to quickly check a price.

Air New Zealand from New York, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu, plus United from San Francisco and Delta from Los Angeles, with American flying seasonally.
Around thirteen hours from the West Coast and over sixteen from New York. Every routing crosses the date line, so you land two calendar days after departure and get the day back coming home.
The austral winter from June through September, unless you are heading for the ski season in Queenstown. December through February is the summer peak.
Yes, and you should. The domestic legs ticket through with the international fare, and an open jaw home from Christchurch often saves a repositioning flight.

The rest of the Auckland file: the date line, the inverted seasons and how to structure a two island itinerary.
Read moreShow lessFrom the West Coast the flight runs around thirteen hours, and the New York nonstop stretches past sixteen southbound. Everything crosses the date line: leave on a Tuesday evening, land Thursday morning, and get the day back flying home. Air New Zealand times its departures late in the evening US time, so dinner happens on the ground and the flight is for sleeping, which makes this one of the easiest ultra long routes to arrive well from, provided the seat flattens.
The seasons in New Zealand run inverted, with December through February the summer peak, compounded by the local school holidays and a cruise season that fills the harbor on the same calendar. The austral winter from June through September is the fare floor, unless you are skiing, in which case the Queenstown season is the best in the southern hemisphere and the domestic connection is an easy hour and a half. The shoulders, October and November and March through May, pair good weather with soft fares.
Auckland is the doorway rather than the whole story. The domestic network fans out to Queenstown, Christchurch and Wellington in under ninety minutes, and we ticket those legs with the international fare so the connections are protected. If the itinerary is Auckland plus Queenstown, consider flying home from Christchurch; the open jaw prices well and saves a repositioning flight. Road trippers picking up a camper should still fly into Auckland; the one way drop fees heading south usually beat backtracking.
Tell our travel experts your dates, your gateway and your South Island plans. We quote Air New Zealand against the American carriers and the Sydney routings, ticket the domestic legs through, and come back with a personal quote typically within the hour. If the trip continues to Australia or the Pacific islands, say so up front; the through fares across the Tasman price far better than separate tickets, and one booking keeps every connection protected.
