Brisbane is the quiet achiever of the Australian premium market: a shorter crossing than Sydney or Melbourne, two carriers flying it nonstop and a fare environment that rewards travelers who look past the obvious gateways. Qantas and United both link the West Coast with Brisbane nonstop, and the one stop options over Sydney, Auckland and Nadi fill in the rest of the map. For most American travelers the route means connecting to the West Coast first, and we build those connections into the quote rather than leaving you to gamble on separate tickets.
The Qantas 787s carry the Business Suite, a flat bed with direct aisle access and the full Qantas long haul service, and the flight time of around fourteen hours from Los Angeles makes this the shortest of the east coast Australian crossings. United flies the route from San Francisco with Polaris flat beds, and the rivalry between the two keeps Brisbane pricing more honest than a two carrier market usually manages. Brisbane airport itself is the easiest arrival in the country, with none of the morning congestion that can stack up in Sydney.

Winghoppers is extremely helpful! They always find the best flights at the best prices. Too bad I hadn't found you earlier, it would have saved me a lot of money. I can recommend it to everyone, even just to quickly check a price.

Qantas from Los Angeles and United from San Francisco. One stop routings over Sydney, Auckland and Nadi cover the other gateways.
Around fourteen hours from Los Angeles, the shortest of the east coast Australian crossings, and a little more from San Francisco.
Yes. The hops to Cairns, Hamilton Island and the Whitsundays ticket through with the international fare, which protects the connection and usually saves money.
The austral winter from June through September is both the best weather and the softest pricing, sitting outside the US and Australian holiday peaks.

More on the Queensland logistics, the subtropical seasons and why the shortest Australian crossing is also the easiest arrival.
Read moreShow lessThe real reason to fly into Brisbane is Queensland. The Gold Coast and its surf run an hour south, the Sunshine Coast an hour north, and the Great Barrier Reef connects over short hops to Cairns, Hamilton Island and the Whitsundays. We ticket those legs together with the international fare, which protects the connections and keeps the reef portion surprisingly cheap on a through ticket. If the Whitsundays are the goal, ask about Hamilton Island direct; the schedule is thin and the right routing saves a backtrack through Cairns. The reef hops leave through the domestic terminal next door, an easy transfer with checked bags moving automatically on a through ticket.
The subtropical seasons of Brisbane flip the usual Australian logic. The austral winter from June through September is the sweet spot on every axis: dry, sunny, mild and perfect reef weather, with soft fares because it sits outside both the US and Australian holiday peaks. Summer brings heat, humidity and afternoon storms alongside the December and January holiday pricing. School holidays in Queensland move fares too, and the Easter weeks fill the reef resorts before they fill the planes. Whale season overlaps the winter sweet spot, with humpbacks running the coast from June to October.
The city itself has grown into the trip rather than just the doorway: a river city rebuilding its center at speed as it builds toward the 2032 Olympics, with a dining scene that has stopped apologizing to Sydney and Melbourne. Two or three days on the river before heading up the coast to the reef is no longer a compromise, and the South Bank parklands hold the only proper beach any Australian city center can claim.
Tell our travel experts your dates, your gateway and how much of Queensland is in the plan. We quote the nonstops against the one stops, ticket the reef legs through, and come back with a personal quote typically within the hour.
