What is a wide body aircraft?
A wide body aircraft has two aisles running the length of the cabin, made possible by a fuselage roughly five to six metres across. It is the only aircraft type with enough width for a proper business class layout in which every passenger reaches an aisle directly.

The list is short enough to learn. Boeing builds the 787 Dreamliner, the 777 and the 767, and previously the 747. Airbus builds the A330, the A350 and the double deck A380. Anything else you fly on is almost certainly a single aisle aircraft, whatever the airline calls the cabin.
The reason to care is entirely about what fits inside. Two aisles allow the staggered and herringbone layouts that define modern business class, most commonly one two one, where every seat touches an aisle and nobody climbs over a neighbour to reach it. On a single aisle aircraft that arrangement is geometrically impossible, so the front cabin becomes a recliner.
This is why checking the aircraft is more useful than checking the airline. The same carrier will fly a flat bed wide body on one route and a recliner narrow body on another, at fares that look similar on a booking page. On a long overnight that difference decides whether you arrive able to work or only able to sleep.
There is a second, quieter benefit. Wide bodies are pressurised and humidified better on the newest types, particularly the 787 and A350, whose composite fuselages allow a lower cabin altitude. Passengers describe arriving less dehydrated and less tired, and on a fourteen hour sector that is not a marketing claim but a genuine difference.
