There is no nonstop from the United States to Phuket and there is unlikely to be one. Every routing goes through a hub, the journey runs close to nineteen hours from the major US gateways, and that structure is the single most important thing to understand here. On a route where you are connecting anyway, the choice of hub matters more than the choice of airline, because the hub decides the length of the layover, the quality of the lounge and which cabin you actually sit in for the long leg.
The Gulf carriers are the obvious answer for the East Coast. Qatar Airways over Doha puts you in the Qsuite for the long sector and the Al Mourjan lounge during the connection, which is the strongest combination available on any Phuket routing. Emirates over Dubai and Etihad over Abu Dhabi work the same way with slightly different trade offs. From the West Coast the Asian hubs make more sense: Singapore Airlines over Changi, Cathay Pacific over Hong Kong, or a Star Alliance carrier into Bangkok with Thai handling the final hop.

Winghoppers is extremely helpful! They always find the best flights at the best prices. Too bad I hadn't found you earlier, it would have saved me a lot of money. I can recommend it to everyone, even just to quickly check a price.

Phuket International sits at the north of the island while the resorts run down the west coast. Reckon on forty five minutes to Patong, an hour or more to the southern beaches, and longer again in high season traffic. Arrange the car before you fly rather than sorting it at arrivals after nineteen hours of travel.
No, and there is unlikely to be one. Every routing connects through a hub, and the full journey runs close to nineteen hours from the major US gateways.
From the East Coast, Doha with Qatar Airways gives you the Qsuite on the long sector and the Al Mourjan lounge during the connection. From the West Coast, Singapore or Hong Kong are shorter overall, and Bangkok with a Thai Airways hop opens the most inventory.
The wet season from May through October carries the lowest fares. May and October are the sweet spot, since the rain is typically heavy and brief rather than constant. Carriers also release better fares from January through March and in late November.
No. Keep it on the same ticket as the international flight. It adds very little to the fare, and it means any delay on the long haul becomes the airline's responsibility rather than a missed connection you paid for twice.
Longer than you think. Four to six hours with lounge access is genuinely restorative on a nineteen hour journey, while a ninety minute connection is a sprint that undoes whatever sleep you managed on the long leg.

The rest of the Phuket brief: which hub to connect through from your coast, why the Bangkok routing opens more inventory, and the two shoulder months that beat the peak.
Read moreShow lessBangkok deserves separate thought. The domestic leg down to Phuket is barely over an hour and runs constantly, so routing through Suvarnabhumi opens up far more inventory on the long sector than routing to Phuket directly ever will. Keep the domestic leg on the same ticket as the international one. It costs very little and it means a delay on the long haul is the airline's problem rather than yours.
The seasonal pattern here is driven by the monsoon and it is unusually clean. The dry season runs from November through April and that is the published peak, with Christmas and New Year the sharpest weeks of the year. The wet season runs May through October, and the fares fall accordingly. What the fare curve does not tell you is that the rain in Phuket is typically heavy and brief rather than constant, so the shoulder months of May and October frequently deliver most of the dry season experience at a fraction of the price.
January through March and late November are when carriers most often release the better business class fares, which sits slightly out of step with the weather peak. That gap is where the value is: the dry season dates that were loaded early and have not sold.
Nineteen hours of travel with a connection in the middle is a different proposition from a single long flight. The layover is not dead time if you plan it. A four to six hour connection in Doha or Singapore with lounge access is genuinely restorative, whereas a ninety minute connection is a sprint that undoes whatever sleep you managed on the long leg. On this journey, deliberately choosing the longer layover is usually the better call.

Reckon on forty five minutes to Patong, an hour or more to the southern beaches, and longer again in the high season traffic. Arrange the transfer in advance; this is not an airport where sorting it on arrival after nineteen hours of travel is a pleasant experience.
