Destination guide

Flying business class to Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City has exactly one nonstop link to the United States, and knowing that changes how you approach the booking entirely. Vietnam Airlines flies San Francisco four times a week, on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, using the Airbus A350. The block time is fifteen hours and forty minutes. No other carrier flies the route without a stop, and no other US city has one at all.

That makes San Francisco the pivot for the whole journey. If you are on the West Coast, the nonstop is straightforward and usually the best answer. If you are anywhere else in the country, the honest comparison is not nonstop against connecting, it is a domestic positioning flight plus the nonstop against a single one stop itinerary over Asia or the Gulf. The second option is frequently both cheaper and more comfortable, which surprises people who fixate on the word nonstop.

Ho Chi Minh City

Airlines and cabins on this route

Vietnam Airlines

Business

The only nonstop, San Francisco four times weekly on the Airbus A350 at fifteen hours forty minutes. A solid flat bed rather than a headline product.

Korean Air

Prestige Business

One stop over Seoul Incheon with a short second leg, one of the smoothest connections into Saigon from the western US.

Qatar Airways

Qsuite

One stop over Doha, and the strongest cabin available on the long sector for anyone starting on the East Coast.

Singapore Airlines

Business

One stop over Changi, with a short hop onward and consistently one of the best cabins in the sky on the long leg.

From our booking desk

One nonstop, and when to ignore it

  1. Vietnam Airlines flies San Francisco four times a week and that is the entire direct market. From anywhere outside the West Coast, positioning to SFO is a real cost that belongs in the comparison.

  2. A single one stop itinerary over Doha, Hong Kong or Seoul frequently beats that positioning flight on both price and cabin. We quote it alongside the nonstop rather than assuming direct must be better.

  3. Tet moves between late January and mid February and effectively closes the country for a week. Check the date before fixing anything, because domestic flights sell out and much of the business district shuts.

Ho Chi Minh City business class FAQs

  • Yes, one. Vietnam Airlines flies San Francisco four times weekly on the Airbus A350, on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, with a block time of fifteen hours and forty minutes. No other US city has a nonstop.

  • Not if you live outside the West Coast. The real comparison is a domestic positioning flight plus the nonstop against a single one stop itinerary over Asia or the Gulf, and the connecting option is frequently both cheaper and more comfortable.

  • Solid rather than spectacular. The A350 cabin is a proper flat bed on a quiet modern aircraft with a pleasant service style, but there is no door or suite. On a fifteen hour sector that is worth weighing against a Qsuite or Singapore Airlines routing.

  • The wet season from May through November, when afternoon rain is short and heavy rather than day ruining. Avoid Christmas, New Year and Tet, which move between late January and mid February.

  • Tet is the Vietnamese lunar new year and it effectively closes the country for a week. Domestic flights sell out, fares climb sharply and much of the business district shuts. Book several months ahead or avoid the window entirely.

The connecting field is deep. Korean Air over Seoul, Cathay Pacific over Hong Kong, Singapore Airlines over Changi, EVA Air over Taipei and Japan Airlines or ANA over Tokyo all reach Saigon with a short second leg. From the East Coast, Qatar Airways over Doha and Emirates over Dubai put a stronger cabin on the long sector than anything else serving the city. When the Vietnam Airlines premium inventory is tight, and on four weekly flights it often is, those are where the value moves.

The A350 cabin itself is a solid flat bed rather than a headline product. Vietnam Airlines is a competent operator with a genuinely pleasant service style, and the aircraft is quiet and modern. What it does not have is a door, a suite or any of the features that define the top tier of Asian business class. On a sector this long, that is worth weighing against a one stop routing in a Qsuite or a Singapore Airlines cabin.

The seasons split the country in two, which complicates a simple rule. In the south, around Saigon itself, the dry season runs from December through April and that is the comfortable window. The wet season from May through November brings afternoon downpours that are heavy and short rather than day ruining. Fares follow the northern hemisphere holiday calendar more than the local weather, so the peaks are Christmas, New Year and Tet, the lunar new year, which moves between late January and mid February.

Tet deserves specific attention. The country effectively closes for a week, domestic flights sell out, prices climb sharply and much of the business districts shut. If your trip is for work, avoid it. If it is for the experience, book several months ahead and accept the premium.

Tan Son Nhat sits unusually close to the centre, around seven kilometres, which on paper is twenty minutes. In practice the traffic in District 1 turns that into forty five minutes or more at the wrong hour. It remains one of the shorter airport transfers in Asia, and after fifteen hours in the air that counts for something.
