Vietnam Airlines flies San Francisco four times a week and that is the entire direct market. From anywhere outside the West Coast, positioning to SFO is a real cost that belongs in the comparison.
A single one stop itinerary over Doha, Hong Kong or Seoul frequently beats that positioning flight on both price and cabin. We quote it alongside the nonstop rather than assuming direct must be better.
Tet moves between late January and mid February and effectively closes the country for a week. Check the date before fixing anything, because domestic flights sell out and much of the business district shuts.

Korean Air over Seoul, Cathay Pacific over Hong Kong, Singapore Airlines over Changi, EVA Air over Taipei and Japan Airlines or ANA over Tokyo all reach Saigon with a short second leg. When the Vietnam Airlines premium inventory is tight, and on four weekly flights it often is, those are where the value moves.
The A350 cabin itself is a solid flat bed rather than a headline product. Vietnam Airlines is a competent operator with a genuinely pleasant service style, and the aircraft is quiet and modern. What it does not have is a door, a suite or any of the features that define the top tier of Asian business class. On a sector this long, that is worth weighing against a one stop routing in a Qsuite or a Singapore Airlines cabin.
The seasons split the country in two, which complicates a simple rule. In the south, around Saigon itself, the dry season runs from December through April and that is the comfortable window. The wet season from May through November brings afternoon downpours that are heavy and short rather than day ruining. Fares follow the northern hemisphere holiday calendar more than the local weather, so the peaks are Christmas, New Year and Tet, the lunar new year, which moves between late January and mid February.
Tet deserves specific attention. The country effectively closes for a week, domestic flights sell out, prices climb sharply and much of the business districts shut. If your trip is for work, avoid it. If it is for the experience, book several months ahead and accept the premium.
Tan Son Nhat sits unusually close to the centre, around seven kilometres, which on paper is twenty minutes. In practice the traffic in District 1 turns that into forty five minutes or more at the wrong hour. It remains one of the shorter airport transfers in Asia, and after fifteen hours in the air that counts for something.
